Every year, Americans report more than two million burglaries, and the majority, or 73.9%, of these thefts happen on residential properties. Perhaps the most shocking news, however, is that the majority of burglaries are very preventable. What are some simple –– and sometimes even strange –– changes you can make around your home to keep your belongings and loved ones safe?
Fake It Until You Make It
If you don’t really have a large dog, thieves don’t need to know that. Stick up a large and highly visible “Beware of Dog” sign to help ward off thieves. Whether you have a quality alarm system or not, signs brandishing the names of alarm and security system manufacturers are similarly effective. “Put an alarm system sign in the front of your home so that burglars think you have one. A home that could potentially have an alarm system is much less appealing for a potential thief than one that won’t immediately summon the police,” The Huffington Post explains.
Smoke ‘Em Out
One unique company offers a system that will release smoke into your home in the event of an unauthorized entry. This obstructs thieves’ view, but –- most importantly –- it will also confuse potential burglars and, in most cases, result in them fleeing from your home.
Don’t Invite Them In
The FBI reveals that 65% of break-ins occur in broad daylight. At least a third of burglaries can be largely blamed on unlocked windows and doors. Always carefully lock up your house, and don’t leave a spare key somewhere where thieves are likely to find it.
